In-Home Care for Veterans

A-1 Home Care Services provides compassionate in-home care services for eligible Veterans and their families throughout the Denver and Aurora metro area.

Many Veterans qualify for assistance through VA Home and Community-Based Services, allowing them to receive care at home instead of moving to a nursing facility.

Our caregivers support Veterans with daily activities while helping them remain safe, independent, and comfortable in their homes.

We coordinate services with VA care teams and follow the care plan authorized by the Veteran’s program.

How Veterans and their families Can Request VA Home Care Services

Veterans may be able to receive in-home support through VA Homemaker/Home Health Aide services or other VA Home and Community-Based Services when the services are approved by the VA.

VA home care is not started directly by the home care agency. The Veteran’s VA care team must first review the Veteran’s needs and approve services through the appropriate VA program or Community Care authorization.

01

Step 1 — Make Sure the Veteran Is Enrolled in VA Health Care

Before VA can approve most home care services, the Veteran generally must be enrolled in the VA Health Care System.

Veterans can apply for VA health care:

  • Online through VA.gov
  • By phone through VA Health Benefits
  • In person at a VA Medical Center or VA clinic
  • With help from an accredited Veterans Service Organization or representative

For Colorado Veterans, the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center in Aurora can help with VA health care registration.

Documents that may be helpful include DD-214 or discharge papers, identification, VA disability award letters if applicable, and insurance information such as Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, or private insurance. VA’s own application instructions list DD214/separation documents, insurance information, and related eligibility information as common items needed for VA health care enrollment. Eastern Colorado VA also says Veterans must be enrolled before appointments and care, and lists DD214, VA disability award letters, income information when applicable, and current health coverage ID cards as helpful documents.

02

Step 2 — Talk With the VA Primary Physician Team or VA Social Worker

After the Veteran is enrolled in VA health care, the Veteran or family should contact the Veteran’s VA primary Physician  , VA social worker and explain what help is needed at home.

The Veteran should clearly describe the need for in-home support, such as help with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers, meal preparation, light household support, or safety at home.

Important: If the you would like to receive services from A-1 Home Care Services Inc., the Veteran should tell the VA social worker or VA care team at this step.

The Veteran may say:

“I would like to receive my authorized in-home care services from A-1 Home Care Services Inc.,.”

The Veteran may provide VA with the agency information:

Step 3 — VA Reviews the Veteran’s Needs

A VA provider, social worker, or care coordinator may review the Veteran’s medical condition, daily care needs, caregiver support, home safety, and ability to remain safely at home.

Based on this review, VA decides whether Homemaker/Home Health Aide services or another VA Home and Community-Based Service is appropriate.

04

Step 4 — VA Issues a Referral or Authorization

If VA approves home care services, VA or its Community Care partner may issue a referral or authorization. The authorization include the approved service type, number of hours or visits, approved dates, and provider information.

If the Veteran requested A-1 Home Care Services, the Veteran should confirm with the VA social worker, VA Community Care office, or TriWest that the authorization/referral is being sent to A-1 Home Care Services Inc.

Services should not begin until VA authorization is approved and received.

05

Step 5 — Services Are Scheduled With the Approved Provider

Once A-1 Home Care Services receives the VA authorization or referral, our team can contact the Veteran or family to discuss scheduling, care needs, caregiver availability, and next steps.

A-1 Home Care Services can help Veterans and families understand the VA home care process, but VA must approve the services before care can begin.
